China has removed General Zhao Zongqi, the former commander of the PLA’s Western Theatre Command, from the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and other key political positions. Zhao was the commander during two of the most important India-China military confrontations in recent years—the 2017 Doklam standoff and the 2020 Galwan Valley clash.
Zhao’s removal comes amid a major shake-up of China’s military leadership under President Xi Jinping. The development has attracted particular attention in India because the PLA Western Theatre Command is responsible for Chinese military operations across Tibet and Xinjiang and along a large section of the China-India border.
The Galwan clash of June 2020 resulted in the deaths of 20 Indian soldiers, while China officially acknowledged four PLA fatalities. Zhao was still leading the Western Theatre Command when the eastern Ladakh crisis erupted. Reports had previously linked him to the operation that preceded the Galwan confrontation, although the allegation was based on a reported US intelligence assessment and has not been publicly confirmed by Beijing.
The development also comes shortly after China removed senior generals Zhang Youxia and Liu Zhenli from the state Central Military Commission amid investigations into alleged serious disciplinary and legal violations.
