The 5-Minute Rule for When Life Falls Apart | Hal Elrod
At twenty, a drunk driver hit him head-on at a combined 150 miles per hour. His heart stopped for six minutes. He woke from a six-day coma with eleven broken bones and was told he would never walk again.Three weeks later, he took his first step.
What his doctors couldn't explain was his state of mind. While his parents were being warned he was in denial, Hal Elrod was calmly telling them he'd already accepted it, because of something he'd learned eighteen months earlier in a sales training room.
It's called the five-minute rule. When something goes wrong, you set a timer and you let yourself feel all of it. Anger, fear, grief, whatever's there. And when the timer goes off, you say three words: can't change it. Then every ounce of energy goes to what you can still control.
In this talk from Mindvalley U, Hal shares the rule that carried him through that crash and, years later, through a leukemia diagnosis with a thirty percent survival rate. He makes a case that lands harder than most: it was never the thing that happened that caused the suffering. It was the resistance to it.
He also walks through the six morning practices he built after losing almost everything in the 2008 crash, the routine that became The Miracle Morning, and explains why most people get affirmations and visualisation backwards.
