Come previsto dalla procedura concordata (dimissioni, audizione, reintegro), l'ex premier si è dimesso da componente della commissione la sera prima, annunciando l'intenzione di "spazzare via tutto il fango" accumulato in oltre due anni di attesa. Ma martedì 4 e mercoledì 5 agosto sono giornate in cui Camera e Senato votano in Aula per l'intera seduta, e per regolamento le commissioni bicamerali si fermano quando l'Assemblea è impegnata nel voto. Il presidente della commissione, Marco Lisei, ha dovuto quindi sconvocare l'audizione, spiegando che i suoi uffici avevano già segnalato alla segreteria di Conte la difficoltà di tenere la seduta proprio in quei giorni. Le date indicate come disponibilità dal leader M5s erano, appunto, il 4 e il 5 agosto.
L'onorevole #GaleazzoBignami è intervenuto ai nostri microfoni, rivendicando il fatto di aver previsto e condiviso l'esito in un video pubblicato in anticipo. "Nei prossimi 40 secondi farò quello che tutti vorremmo fare davanti a un illusionista, vi spiegherò dov'è il trucco", spiega Bignami, ricostruendo il meccanismo: Conte avrebbe dato la propria disponibilità esattamente nel momento in cui aveva la certezza che Camera e Senato sarebbero stati convocati per le votazioni.
