Катастрофа подводной лодки «Курск» стала первым экзаменом для новой власти – и она его провалила. Тогда, в августе 2000 года, страна каждый день слышала ложь про «связь с экипажем», хотя подлодка уже лежала на дне, а моряки погибли без помощи. Владимир Путин предпочел отдых в Сочи и заявления в духе «она утонула» – и этот холодный цинизм стал его политическим стилем на десятилетия вперед.
