Human trafficking in Bangladesh: Smugglers target Rohingya refugees fleeing camps
Human trafficking has become a grave threat to Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, with thousands risking perilous journeys to escape overcrowded camps each year.A recent UN report reveals that between 2022 and 2024, 33,000 Rohingya fled Myanmar and Bangladesh, with women and children now comprising 70% of those attempting dangerous sea crossings.
As aid dwindles and living conditions deteriorate, many fall prey to smugglers and traffickers offering false promises of safety, work, or marriage abroad.
Authorities in Cox's Bazar recently rescued 66 people, including Rohingya women and children, who had been trapped by traffickers.
The Bangladeshi Coast Guard is intensifying efforts to crack down on human trafficking networks, but the scale of the problem remains daunting.
With over a million Rohingya confined to camps and facing an uncertain future, rights groups warn that the threat of exploitation will continue to grow unless more comprehensive solutions are found.
