US Level 4 Travel Warning Threatens to Hit Uganda's Tourism Economy | Firstpost Africa
The United States is keeping Uganda firmly on its Level 4 'Do Not Travel' list. The strict alert—reissued by the US Department of State Consular Affairs—cites escalating security threats, including violent crime, localised instability, and the risk of terrorism targeting tourist hubs. Compounding these concerns is a cross-border Ebola outbreak originating from the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). While Uganda has discharged its last active Ebola patient, it must navigate a tense 42-day window to be declared virus-free officially. Meanwhile, Washington has enforced a strict 21-day flight restriction on anyone returning from the DRC to limit transmission. These sweeping bans threaten to devastate Uganda’s tourism economy—a sector contributing nearly six percent to its GDP and supporting hundreds of thousands of jobs.
