CNN founder Ted Turner dies aged 87, leaving global media legacy
Ted Turner, the founder of CNN and a pioneer of 24-hour television news, has died at the age of 87. Turner launched CNN in 1980, transforming global journalism by introducing round-the-clock news coverage at a time when traditional broadcasters had not yet embraced the format.His network gained prominence with live coverage of major events, including the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster and the Gulf War, setting a new standard for real-time reporting.
Turner later sold his media empire to Time Warner in 1996 but remained an outspoken critic of media consolidation and declining international coverage.
Beyond broadcasting, Turner became a major philanthropist, donating $1bn to establish the United Nations Foundation and advocating for environmental causes, including efforts to restore bison populations in the United States. His legacy reshaped how news is delivered worldwide.
