China is building the world’s largest dam just across the border from Arunachal Pradesh, a 60,000 MW mega project on the Yarlung Tsangpo, the river that becomes our Siang and Brahmaputra. India’s answer is the 11,200 MW Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP), a giant reservoir meant to shield the Northeast from sudden floods or a dried-up river. But on the night of 23 October, protests against that dam turned violent in Pasighat: the NHPC office and a police station were set on fire, BJP leaders’ homes were attacked, and around 40 police personnel were injured. The Centre has now airlifted 250 Rapid Action Force personnel to the state.

China keeps building. India can’t even finish a survey. So who really wins when India’s China-shield dam burns?

In this video, Kinjal Choudhary explains:

What exactly happened in Pasighat, and who the “Gen Z” group behind the night violence is
What the Adi protesters fear: land, displacement and culture (and why 27 villages is a community estimate, not an official figure)
The CBI’s foreign-funding (FCRA) case and whether there is any Chinese hand
China’s Medog “water bomb” vs India’s Siang dam: the numbers, side by side
How SUMP protects India from floods and dry-season water cuts
Why China has stopped sharing Brahmaputra data and why India has no water treaty with Beijing
Why every year of delay to the Siang dam is a gift to China
China’s “Zangnan” claim, fresh border face-offs and the information war around Arunachal
