Iran targets Bahrain and Kuwait as US launches strikes on Qeshm Island

Iran and the United States have exchanged fresh strikes across the Gulf, marking another escalation despite both sides insisting a ceasefire remains in place. Kuwait says its air defences intercepted Iranian missiles and drones, but confirmed its international airport was hit by drones, causing significant material damage and injuries. Bahrain also activated warning sirens, while the US military says attacks targeting its Fifth Fleet headquarters and other facilities were successfully intercepted.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard says the attacks were retaliation for a US strike on an Iranian oil tanker near the Strait of Hormuz and subsequent attacks on military communication facilities on Qeshm Island. Tehran has framed the operation as a direct response to what it calls repeated US aggression, warning that any future attacks on Iranian territory, military facilities or maritime infrastructure will trigger a stronger response.
The US Central Command says it carried out what it described as self-defence strikes on Qeshm Island after Iranian attacks against regional neighbours, while maintaining that the ceasefire remains active. Washington says it intercepted multiple Iranian missiles and drones and insists the military action was defensive in nature.
The escalation comes amid conflicting claims over the status of US-Iran talks. President Donald Trump says communication with Tehran has continued daily and dismissed reports of a breakdown in negotiations as "fake news". Iranian media, citing informed sources, report that exchanges over a proposed memorandum of understanding have been paused for several days, highlighting deep mistrust between the two sides.
Iranian officials say any diplomatic breakthrough requires "tangible verification" rather than verbal commitments, arguing that hostilities must end across all fronts, including the Strait of Hormuz and Lebanon. Despite the latest military confrontation, both Washington and Tehran indicate diplomatic channels remain open, even as tensions continue to rise.
