Trump ties autism to widely used over-the-counter drug | LiveNOW from FOX
President Donald Trump said at the White House today that taking the common pain relief drug Tylenol during pregnancy can lead to an increased risk of autism for unborn babies, due to the drug's active ingredient acetaminophen. The President claimed that taking Tylenol during pregnancy, "can be associated with a very increased risk of autism". Scientists are highly skeptical of the claim, arguing previous studies have been inconclusive. LiveNOW’s Austin Westfall is learning more from Dr. Evan Nadler, who is a Pediatric Surgeon and Researcher."So I've been waiting for this meeting for 20 years. And it's not that everything's 100% understood or known, but I think we've made a lot of strides. I wish it was done a long time ago," President Trump said during his White House announcement.
"The FDA is responding to clinical and laboratory studies that suggest a potential association between infant use during pregnancy and adverse developmental outcomes, including later diagnosis for ADHD and autism," Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said.
The National Institutes of Health lists some possible risk factors such as prenatal exposure to pesticides or air pollution, extreme prematurity or low birth weight, certain maternal health problems or parents conceiving at an older age.
