Getting Slower? It Might Not Be Aging. | J. Sawalla Guseh | TEDxBoston Salon
What if getting slower isn’t simply a consequence of aging, but a warning sign that something in your body has changed?Cardiologist and physician-scientist J. Sawalla Guseh explores why cardiorespiratory fitness is one of the most informative measures of human health—and why a change from your personal baseline may matter even before obvious symptoms appear.
Drawing on a century of exercise physiology, research linking fitness to longevity, and the story of an athlete whose unexpected decline in performance led to a surprising cardiac diagnosis, Guseh makes the case for treating fitness as a vital sign.
His message is simple: Know your fitness. Know when it changes.

Sawalla Guseh, MD, is a cardiologist, physician-scientist, and Director of the Cardiovascular Performance Program at Massachusetts General Hospital. He is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and serves as a team cardiologist for the New England Patriots and New England Revolution.
His clinical and scientific work focuses on human performance, the cardiovascular biology of exercise, and the use of cardiorespiratory fitness to understand health and disease. His research explores how fitness predicts long-term health and how changes in exercise capacity may provide early signals of underlying disease.
