This imbalance led Britain to illegally smuggle opium grown in India into China, creating widespread dependency. When the Qing Dynasty tried to resist this by destroying opium stocks and enforcing strict bans, it triggered a military response. The First Opium War (1839–1842) showcased the sheer technological superiority of British naval forces, leading to China's defeat and the humiliating Treaty of Nanking.
