Mirchi Bangla Friday Classics presents: Rabindranath Tagore’s timeless story “Jibita O Mrita”Date of Broadcast – 7th August 2026
The short story Jibito O Mrito was first published in the magazine Sadhana in the month of Shravan, 1299 BS, corresponding to July–August 1892. It was later included in Galpaguchchha. Written about the plight of a childless widow in a patriarchal society, this story remains immortal for its final line:
কাদম্বিনী মরিয়া প্রমাণ করিল, সে মরে নাই
জমিদার বাড়ির বিধবা কাদম্বিনী সন্তানহীনা। জমিদার শারদাশঙ্করের ছোট্ট ছেলে খোকাই তার জীবন। একদিন জ্ঞান হারায় কাদম্বিনী। সবাই মনে করে সে মারা গিয়েছে। শ্মশানে জ্ঞান ফেরার পরে কাদম্বিনী মনে করে, সে সত্যিই মরে গিয়েছে। কোথায় যাবে ভাবতে না পেরে শেষে হাজির হয় সই যোগমায়ার বাড়িতে। সেখানে যখন জানাজানি হয় কাদম্বিনী মারা গিয়েছে, তখন তাদের বাড়ি ছেড়ে বেরিয়ে পড়ে। জমিদার বাড়িতে ফেরার পরেও তাকে ভূত মনে করে শারদাশঙ্করের পরিবার। খোকাকে চোখের সামনে দেখে ততক্ষণে কাদম্বিনী বুঝতে পেরেছে, সে বেঁচেই আছে। কিন্তু নিজে যে বেঁচে আছে, তা প্রমাণ করার জন্য চরমপন্থার আশ্রয় নেয় সে। কাদম্বিনী কি প্রমাণ করতে পারে, সে বেঁচে আছে?
