Trump urges Iranians to ‘keep protesting, take over institutions’ and says ‘help is on the way’
US President Donald Trump has urged Iranians to “keep protesting” and “take over” institutions in the country, saying he has cancelled “all meetings” with Iranian officials, adding that “help is on the way.” The UN human rights chief, Volker Turk, says he is “horrified” by the violence in Iran amid reports that hundreds of people have been killed during the protests. Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, tells Al Jazeera that Tehran is ready for any military confrontation, warning that Washington has previously tested this option.Tens of thousands of pro-government supporters have taken to the streets in a show of force after weeks of deadly unrest, as Iran remains cut off from the internet for a fifth straight day. State media say more than 100 security personnel have been killed. At the same time, opposition activists report a far higher death toll that includes hundreds of protesters — figures Al Jazeera cannot independently verify.
Al Jazeera correspondents are covering developments from multiple locations. Tohid Asadi, reporting from Tehran, says Iranian officials have yet to formally respond to Trump’s remarks but are signalling preparedness for all scenarios. Kimberly Halkett, in Washington, DC, says the White House views Trump’s direct messaging to protesters as a key pressure tactic, even as military options remain controversial domestically. Ali Hashem, reporting from Doha, says Qatar is pushing for de-escalation through dialogue, warning that any escalation would further destabilise the region.
