The Internationalist: Issue #80 | Lucky Khambule

When Lucky Khambule came to Dublin in 2013, he was kept in direct provision, which are ‘temporary’ centres where asylum seekers are moved when they arrive in Ireland. It is common for asylum seekers to spend many years in these centers while they wait for their applications to be approved or rejected. Meals in these centers are severely rationed. Children suffer the most, with meany being born in these centres and have limited access to outdoor spaces or educational facilities.

Seeing such adverse conditions of asylum seekers like him, Khambule co-founded the Movement of Asylum Seekers in Ireland (MASI) in 2014, advocating for their rights and calling for the end of direct provision. And even though, in 2021, the Government of Ireland had declared the end of direct provision by 2024, the situation of asylum seekers, especially those of colour, hasn’t improved.

For issue #80 of The Internationalist, Khambule sits down with Tanya Singh to discuss some of the pressing issues being faced by asylum seekers in Ireland today, especially in the wake of a rising anti-immigrant wave.
