D’un éclat éblouissant, inoxydable, remarquablement stable et pouvant être refondu à l'infini, l’or a tout pour s’inscrire dans l’éternité. Avant même d’acquérir une valeur marchande, ce métal fascinant s’est imposé en marqueur de prestige dans de nombreuses cultures : considéré comme un don du ciel, il accompagne les défunts de haut rang dans leur voyage vers l’au-delà. Le tombeau de Toutankhamon, exhumé en 1922, en constitue peut-être l’exemple le plus éblouissant.
