Temporary closure of the Strait of Hormuz for military drills announced by Iranian regime | DW News

While Iranian officials were talking in Geneva, Iran's Revolutionary Guard is conducting military drills. Announcing on Tuesday the temporary closure of the Strait of Hormuz. That came after the start of live-fire exercises, which began a day earlier. Analysts say it's a clear demonstration of strength from Tehran, amid a growing US military buildup in the Middle East — and threats from the US President Donald Trump of 'consequences' if Tehran fails to do a deal.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most important shipping arteries, connecting the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. From there, ships can then travel to the rest of the world. It's around 33 kilometers wide at its narrowest point - with 20% of the world's oil passing through it every day.
And threats to disrupt the flow of trade there have previously caused a spike in energy prices, including during the Israel-Iran war in June.
