Angeklagte im „Panama Papers"-Skandal freigesprochen
2016 wurde mit den „Panama Papers" ein globaler Finanzskandal aufgedeckt. Doch zur Verurteilung der Tatverdächtigen kommt es nun nicht mehr: Aus Mangel an Beweisen wurden alle 28 Angeklagten überraschend freigesprochen. Das teilte das Gericht in Panama-Stadt mit.Den Angeklagten war Geldwäsche durch die Gründung von 215.000 Briefkastenfirmen in Steueroasen vorgeworfen worden, in denen Politiker:innen, Prominente und Sportler:innen ihr Vermögen verschleiert haben sollen. Im Frühjahr 2016 hatten der NDR, WDR und Süddeutsche Zeitung sowie weitere Medien des Netzwerks investigativer Journalisten die Geschäfte der in Panama gegründeten Briefkastenfirmen offengelegt. Den Medien waren 11,5 Millionen Dokumente zugespielt worden.
