Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow Over Mystara - No Death Clear (Elf)

Shadow Over Mystara is a beat 'em up developed by Capcom for arcades back in 1996, and it's one of their most popular games because of the depth in its game systems, and how well they integrated the Dungeons & Dragons RPG elements. You have six different classes to choose from, all who have their own unique abilities, many different branching paths and routes to take through the game, and quite a few secrets to find along the way.

Personally speaking, while I can see the game is well made for what they were aiming for, I am still not a fan of this type of beat 'em up. I cleared this once with the Cleric several years ago, and I thought maybe nowadays I'd like it a bit more, so I learned it again with a new character. And I still don't like it very much. It feels like pretty much all of the stuff that I don't like about this game is what makes it popular - all of the equipment you can find that either buffs your character or trivializes a boss, all of the secrets there are to find (which ones are necessary? which are useless?), the poor balancing, the item wheel and spells, and just the RPG mechanics in general. I like straight forward, no nonsense arcade games, so all of this stuff is a negative for me. But I'm in the minority, and most people love this game, both casual players and dedicated fans of the genre. This game also shines a bit more in co-op play, if you get some friends together for a run.

I wouldn't say Mystara is a bad game; I think it can still be fun after you learn everything, but it'll never be anywhere near one of my favorites. I actually like the prequel to this, Tower of Doom, quite a bit more. For me, Capcom hit the right balance of RPG elements and arcade design in that game. The only thing I really dislike about it is the RNG damage, which was their cheeky way of approximating dice rolls. That's crap, but I get it, at least.

For people who don't know the game, I'll detail some of the key points in this run:
• The name you choose at the start determines which item you receive. You can find a table online to figure out which one you want, but for the Elf, the ear rings (which increase magic damage) seems like the best choice.
• The Displacer Beast drops a piece of its skin after you attack him a few times. If you pick it up, then talk to the shop keeper before the next stage starts, he'll craft a cloak out of it that makes you immune to most projectiles. That's probably the best item to use in that slot.
• Once you get to the gnome village, load up on the CSW rings. They're expensive, but you'll need them to heal you if you want to get the legendary sword in the next stage.
• In order to get the legendary sword, you have to pick up the cursed sword before the Red Dragon. You have to swing it around 30 times before it turns into the legendary sword, but every time you swing it, it hurts you. This is where the healing rings come in. But there is a trick to avoid taking damage. If you do a short jump (double tap the jump botton) and swing just before you land, you'll sometimes trigger the red skull icon (which counts as a swing) without it actually damaging you. Hopefully you can get it right several times, because taking every damage from every swing will cost you more than 7 or 8 healing rings.
• The dragon fights are both easy for the Elf. Anyone can hit him with the LBOs after he drops down from the rock attack, but the elf also has another nuke up her sleeves: Haste. If you activate it, and hit him a few times before he starts his next attack, you can stun lock him for almost his entire health bar.
• Next, just hope one of the demon dogs drops a yellow rod. That boosts your lightning attacks, and you'll want that for Ezerhorden. He's very weak to lightning, so if you can hit him 3 or 4 times with a buffed lightning bolt, you'll be all set. (You can also hit him with Silver Daggers and Magic Missiles after you run out of lightning, if necessary)
• Finally, for the big demon before the last set of bosses, just hit him with a bunch of hammers and throw LBOs on him. If he's still alive, you can either try attacking him (risky), or blow through your magic missiles. Try not to waste your blizzards, because you'll want them for the triple boss fight right after this.
• For the last boss, if you can get your hands on a flame ring, it makes you immune to all of his fire attacks, which makes it easy to him with LBOs like the previous dragon. I didn't have one, but Haste is all the Elf needs.
