En la víspera del Mundial de Qatar 2022, desde el centro de convenciones más grande de Oriente Medio, el presidente de FIFA Gianni Infantino dio uno de los discursos más extraños de la historia del fútbol. FIFA había unido su suerte a un diminuto y estrechamente controlado petroestado. Acusado, además, de maltratar a los trabajadores migrantes que habían construido los estadios para su Mundial. Hablamos de jornadas de 18 horas. De salarios robados. De pasaportes confiscados. De miles de muertos bajo el calor de Oriente Medio. Se había comenzado a hablar de esclavitud moderna. Para mantener esta realidad en segundo plano mientras albergaban una gigantesca fiesta global en un país del tamaño de la comunidad autónoma de Murcia en España o de Nueva Jersey en EEUU, los qatarís debían controlar la narrativa. Tenían de su lado a Infantino y sus lecciones de ética. Y los que no estaban de su lado debían ser silenciados.Esto es Power Plays. Una serie sobre deporte, política y autoritarismo presentada por @humanrightsfdn y la colaboración de La Media Inglesa en su versión en español. HRF es una organización que lucha contra los regímenes tiránicos que controlan las vidas de más de dos tercios de la población mundial. En esta primera temporada de Power Plays vamos a explorar algunos de los regímenes que han explotado la Copa del Mundo de fútbol durante el último siglo. Comenzando por la Italia fascista de 1934.
