This takeover, near the border with South Sudan, is a significant blow, as Heglig houses the main oil processing facility for South Sudan, a vital revenue source for Juba. The seizure marks a major escalation in the brutal civil war that began in April 2023, which has already displaced 12 million people and devastated the nation. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump's efforts to broker peace have struggled. His administration recently sanctioned a network accused of hiring former Colombian military personnel to fight for the RSF, which the US accuses of genocide.
