Kegiatan pemusnahan ini berlangsung di Gedung Keuangan Negara, Surabaya, dipimpin langsung oleh Menteri Keuangan Purbaya.
Pemusnahan dilakukan secara simbolis dengan cara dibakar sebagai bagian dari program Gempur Rokok Ilegal.
Lantas, Purbaya menekankan bahwa upaya ini penting untuk meningkatkan pendapatan negara dari sektor cukai.
Ia menegaskan kebijakan tidak menaikkan cukai harus diimbangi dengan kepatuhan pengusaha rokok dalam membayar pajak.
Selain itu, Menkeu juga mengajak produsen rokok ilegal untuk beralih ke jalur resmi melalui kawasan industri hasil tembakau (IHT).
Skema serupa telah diterapkan di beberapa daerah untuk menciptakan iklim usaha yang lebih adil.
Sementara itu, Purbaya menegaskan tujuan pemerintah bukan menghancurkan industri tembakau, melainkan menciptakan persaingan sehat.
Pemusnahan rokok ilegal ini merupakan hasil operasi Direktorat Jenderal Bea dan Cukai Jawa Timur sejak Januari hingga September.
Total terdapat 1.519 Surat Bukti Penindakan dengan estimasi kerugian negara mencapai Rp210 miliar.
