Opportunities to build coalitions to develop new therapies for unmet medical needs are critical, particularly for low- and middle-income countries. Although every pandemic in the last 100 years was caused by a single-stranded RNA virus, pharmaceutical companies avoid these targets due to high costs and uncertain markets. Academic drug discovery, proven during SARS-CoV-2, is therefore essential for preparing for the next pandemic. Dr. Liotta has authored over 300 peer-reviewed publications and is an inventor of over 120 issued US patents. He is best known for his invention of emtricitabine and lamivudine, which continue to play pivotal roles in curbing the spread of HIV around the world. Emtricitabine made possible the first-ever combination therapy for HIV/AIDS as a once-daily pill, while lamivudine became the first drug approved by the FDA to treat hepatitis B infections. The Emory University Office of Technology Transfer estimates that about 95% of the people living with HIV/AIDS in the U.S. take or have taken one of the drugs co-invented by Dr. Liotta. He continues to make important contributions to other therapeutic fronts, including, inter alia, an anticancer agent for treating hard-to-treat breast cancers and an oral drug for controlling hot flashes in postmenopausal women.
