How Pilots Handle GPS Jamming (airBaltic A220 Cockpit to Armenia)
Join us in the airBaltic Airbus A220 cockpit for an overnight flight from Riga to Yerevan, Armenia, and straight back. GPS jamming and spoofing, busy airspace and high terrain make this far more than an ordinary cockpit ride, with the Captain explaining how the crew handles each challenge along the way to ensure a safe and smooth operation.Departing Riga, Latvia (RIX), we follow a route through the Suwałki Gap between Belarus and Kaliningrad, skirt Ukrainian airspace and cross the busy Black Sea corridor toward Yerevan (EVN). With GPS interference affecting much of the journey, we get a close look at how airline pilots navigate when satellite navigation becomes unreliable.
On the flight deck, the crew explains alternative navigation using DME/DME, VOR/DME and the inertial reference system, how they monitor position accuracy, and when they request radar vectors from air traffic control. We also see how GNSS interference complicates operations around the high terrain near Yerevan, including the approach and departure.
After roughly four hours outbound and a quick 45 minute turnaround, it’s straight back to Riga. Along the way: a moonlit cockpit, weather over the Black Sea, airBaltic business class meals, Starlink Wi-Fi, sunrise views and mysterious radio transmissions in Russian over Lithuania. We finish with a beautiful morning approach over the city of Riga, around nine hours after setting off.
