São Vicente marca o início efetivo da colonização no Brasil e torna-se o primeiro núcleo institucionalizado em todo o território brasileiro, estando entre as cidades mais antigas continuadamente habitadas do continente americano.[8] Fundada em 1532 pelo militar e administrador colonial português Martim Afonso de Sousa, na Capitania de São Vicente, a criação da vila atendeu às ordens do Rei Dom João III de Portugal .
