Pistons' Pace Mannion Wins Free Buddy's Pizza for Everyone
January 20, 1989 - As of 2026, Pace Mannion remains the only player in Pistons franchise history whose first field goal with the team clinched free pizza for 20,000 people in the greater Metro Detroit area.In 1989, the rules of the Palace of Auburn Hills were simple: Score 130 points, win free Buddy's Pizza for everyone. And so, even with this particular midseason game between the Detroit Pistons and Indiana Pacers far out of reach, intrigue remained. That's where Pace Mannion came in.
Signed one week prior, Mannion was making just his third of five total appearances with the club on this particular evening. And while fellow reserves Fennis Dembo and Micheal Williams did their part to inch the Pistons toward that 130 milestone, it ended up being Mannion who unlocked that pizza prize for all.
Mannion ended up with four points on the night—the only four points of his Pistons career—in a 132-99 win.
This marked the only game all year in which the Pistons hit that Buddy's plateau, though not for lack of trying. Two months later, the Pistons were stuck on 129 points at the end of a blowout win, going as far as to intentionally foul and call time-out as a means of yielding one final shot at 130, but it was all for naught (it should be noted that this behavior did not always ruffle feathers in the same way it does in the modern era).
Lastly, it's also worth noting that even short of 130, there was still a consolation prize. The Pistons scoring 115 points yielded a half-off Buddy's coupon.
