Orlando Woolridge Exposes his Matchup with Rookie Shaq

December 9, 1992 - The Orlando Magic—and the NBA as a whole for that matter—didn't quite know what they had with Shaquille O'Neal at the outset of the 1992-93 season. Nary a month into his rookie campaign, Shaq ran into the Detroit Pistons for the first time of his career, matched up with an opposing center in Bill Laimbeer who loved loitering around the perimeter all night. As such, the Magic experimented with matching Shaq up with athletic 6-foot-9 forward Orlando Woolridge at the start of the second half. Just seven days shy of his 33rd birthday, Woolridge feasted, scoring the bulk of his 17 points in a flurry before the Magic abandoned their gameplan and found someone else to station Shaq near.

O'Neal, hassled by Laimbeer's lumbering body on the other end, finished with 17 points on just 7-of-16 shooting in a 108-103 loss.
