A miles de metros de altura, en el Himalaya, se encuentra el antiguo reino de Mustang. El distrito alberga monasterios y templos antiguos que constituyen el fundamento de una cultura tibetana singular sobre suelo nepalí.El duro clima ha afectado gravemente a los templos y, con ellos, a su cultura única. No ha sido hasta la restauración de los monasterios que se impulsó un renacimiento cultural en los últimos años.
El conservador italiano Luigi Fieni y su amigo, el sobrino del último rey de Mustang, Tsewang Bista, viajan por cuatro semanas por el antiguo reino en el norte de Nepal. Tienen una misión: conservar la cultura del reino de Mustang para las generaciones futuras. Pero a Mustang se le está acabando el tiempo: si los monasterios no son restaurados a gran escala ya, caerán en ruinas. Y un resurgimiento del budismo no agradaría a todos en la región: sobre todo de la vecina China, que tiene otros intereses y quiere evitar que Mustang se convierta en un refugio para exiliados tibetanos.
