Что такое абсолютная монархия на самом деле? Мы привыкли думать, что абсолютный монарх это король, который может всё. Казнить, миловать, запрещать книги, начинать войны, ссылать фаворитов и управлять государством как личным имуществом.
Но реальность была сложнее. Даже самые могущественные европейские монархи XVII–XVIII веков постоянно зависели от дворянства, парламентов, местных элит, денег, армии, налогов, бюрократии и банальной способности удерживать власть.
В этом выпуске разбираемся, почему средневековые государства были совсем не похожи на современные, как военная революция усилила королей, зачем абсолютизму понадобились налоги и постоянные армии, почему Людовик XIV был исключением, а не правилом, и почему «абсолютная власть» почти никогда не была по-настоящему абсолютной.
