India's Mission Drishti, developed by Bengaluru-based startup GalaxEye, created history by becoming the world's first OptoSAR satellite, combining Optical Imaging and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) into a single Earth observation platform. Launched aboard SpaceX Falcon 9, it was also India's largest privately built Earth observation satellite and was hailed as a landmark achievement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
However, just weeks after launch, communication with the satellite was lost following a powerful geomagnetic solar storm that reportedly damaged a critical onboard system during the Launch and Early Orbit Phase (LEOP). Recovery efforts continue, but GalaxEye says the chances of restoring contact are now very low. The company is reviewing the mission while moving ahead with its next-generation OptoSAR constellation.
In this video, we explain:
What Mission Drishti was
What makes OptoSAR technology revolutionary
How solar storms affect satellites
Why the satellite started tumbling in orbit
What this means for India's private space ecosystem
Can GalaxEye recover from this setback?
Future of India's Earth observation satellites
