The Day The National Debt Actually Becomes a Problem

This video explores the moment when government debt stops being an abstract number and starts competing directly with the things taxpayers expect their money to fund.
In 2024, U.S. net interest costs reached roughly $882 billion, surpassing national defense spending. As older low-interest debt is refinanced at higher rates, that bill continues to grow, leaving less room for everything else. The consequences could spread far beyond Washington. Higher borrowing costs put pressure on businesses, housing, investment, and wages. Social Security faces its own funding challenges, while companies dependent on cheap debt become increasingly vulnerable as interest rates rise. But the most important question is what happens if the government keeps borrowing instead of closing the gap.
The United States borrows in its own currency, which means the crisis doesn’t necessarily end in a traditional bankruptcy. Instead, the pressure could appear through inflation, weaker purchasing power, slower growth, and a larger share of tax revenue going toward interest rather than public services.
The national debt doesn’t become dangerous because of one dramatic number. It becomes dangerous when servicing yesterday’s promises starts consuming tomorrow’s economy.
