LIVE: Dubai Restaurants Make Major Cuts in Menu as US Iran War Hits Food Supply | N18G

Two months into the US-Iran war, Dubai’s restaurant industry is feeling the pressure. The UAE imports more than 80% of its food, almost all of it through the Strait of Hormuz, which has been effectively closed since February 28th. A survey of 30 industry leaders operating around 400 restaurants found demand has dropped by an average of 27% compared to last year. Supplier costs are up 13%, and air freight rates have risen by as much as 70% on some routes. Chefs are shortening menus, swapping imported ingredients for local alternatives, and cutting costs where they can. Tourist arrivals have also dropped sharply since the war began, hitting restaurants in business districts and tourist areas the hardest. Dubai authorities have rolled out support measures and fee relief for operators.
