US President Donald Trump says Washington has reached an agreement with Iran and plans to issue a statement confirming the deal, though Tehran has not yet publicly confirmed the announcement.According to Trump, the agreement includes an Iranian commitment not to pursue nuclear weapons and the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy shipping route.
The president also said sanctions on Iran could potentially be lifted but ruled out providing Tehran with cash as part of the agreement.
The proposed deal is expected to trigger a 60-day negotiation period during which major issues, including Iran's nuclear programme and its enriched uranium stockpiles, would continue to be discussed.
Despite the apparent breakthrough, significant questions remain over the exact terms of the agreement, with Washington and Tehran offering differing accounts of what the memorandum of understanding contains.
