Barefoot, half naked men with chains hanging around their necks will march in procession to atone for guilt or thank God for a special favor received during Good Friday in Atlixco, Puebla. Many participate year after year and for these men, it’s not a form of torture, but rather a cherished Mexican tradition that has played out for more than a hundred years. According to the legend, the first "engrillado" (chained) dates back to 1915, when a man flagellated himself at night to ask forgiveness for the sins he had committed.
