Byzanz – Das vergessene Römische Reich
Über 1.000 Jahre ist das Byzantinische Reich mit seiner Hauptstadt Konstantinopel eine der einflussreichsten Großmächte im Mittelalter. Als Fortsetzung des Ostteils des Römischen Reichs bildet Byzanz die Brücke zwischen Ost und West, zwischen Orient und Europa. Kaiser wie Justinian I. sind prägende Figuren der byzantinischen Geschichte. Das religiöse, wirtschaftliche und politische Zentrum bildet dabei Konstantinopel – das heutige Istanbul –, eine der bedeutendsten Metropolen seiner Zeit.Bis zum Jahr 1453: Die Stadt, deren Mauern lange Zeit als unüberwindbar galten, wird erobert. Wie kann das gelingen? Warum ist der Fall Konstantinopels so prägend für die gesamte Region und was haben die Kreuzzüge damit zu tun?
