Jusqu'au 19e siècle, cette opération était considérée comme le dernier recours lorsque la vie de la mère ne pouvait de toute façon plus être sauvée. Il est peu probable que Jules César soit venu au monde de cette manière, et pourtant, le mythe perdure encore aujourd'hui.
