Kings and Generals historical animated documentary series on the Eastern Front of World War II continues with the largest invasion in history - Operation Barbarossa. In September 1941, the Eastern Front reached a decisive turning point. As Stalin reluctantly permitted a retreat, the Southwestern Front was already surrounded and crushed in the massive Battle of Kyiv. Hundreds of thousands of Red Army soldiers were trapped, and only a fraction escaped. While Ukraine’s capital fell, General Zhukov rushed to Leningrad to take command and rebuild collapsing defenses, enforcing draconian orders to hold the city at all costs. The German assault drove to within 12 kilometers of the city center, yet the defenders clung to the Pulkovo Heights, preventing total disaster. Meanwhile, Hitler issued the infamous directive to erase Leningrad from the map, relying on blockade, bombardment, and starvation. To the south, Kyiv burned as NKVD mines and sabotage set the city ablaze, while the Wehrmacht uncovered the grim aftermath of Soviet resistance. Amid this destruction, plans for Operation Typhoon—the final drive on Moscow—took shape, with the largest concentration of German mobile forces yet assembled, even as supply shortages and tank losses mounted. This episode covers the third week of September 1941, where Soviet tragedy and German overconfidence collided, shaping the brutal course of World War II on the Eastern Front.
