Rather than presenting Bhairava merely as a fierce divine form, this stava explores Bhairava as the supreme Self, the consciousness underlying the entire universe.
The verses speak of transcending fear, suffering, delusion and the fear of death through devotion, contemplation and recognition of the divine within.

🌺 English Translation & Meaning
Verse 1
I bow within my heart to Bhairavanatha, the refuge of those who have no other refuge.
You are the single, infinite, beginningless consciousness that pervades all moving and unmoving existence.
Verse 2
Through the power of your grace, I now perceive this entire universe as pervaded by you.
O Maheshvara, you are always my very Self; therefore everything becomes filled with the awareness of my own divine nature.
Verse 3
When you, the Lord, are recognized as the consciousness pervading my own Self and the entire universe, there can be no fear of worldly existence.
Even when difficult actions and circumstances produce suffering, delusion and fear, the devotee remains established in the Divine.
Verse 4
O Death, do not cast upon me your terrible and wrathful gaze.
Through steadfast devotion to Shankara and contemplation of Him, I have become filled with the power of Bhairava, and therefore I am fearless.
Verse 5
The radiant awareness of Bhairava destroys the accumulated darkness of worldly ignorance.
O Lord, having entered this divine consciousness, I no longer fear death, Yama or the forces that represent the consequences of mortality and karma.
Verse 6
When the rays of true knowledge arise and reveal the reality underlying the universe, I recognize the truth of existence.
Immersed in the nectar of divine consciousness, I find supreme peace within the Self.
Verse 7
Whenever a state of suffering or distress enters the field of my mind, O Lord, the nectar-like contemplation of your non-dual nature immediately begins to rain upon me.
Your remembrance becomes an inner source of peace.
Verse 8
O Shankara, this is the truth: vows, charity, sacred bathing and austerities can help remove worldly suffering.
Yet contemplation of the nectar of your teachings causes a continuous stream of inner peace to flow through the heart.
Verse 9
My consciousness dances, sings and rejoices intensely, O Bhairavanatha.
Having attained you — the one beloved and beautifully perceived through awakened awareness — it experiences a state that is extremely difficult for others to attain.
Verse 10
Abhinavagupta composed this hymn on the Krishna Dashami of the month of Pausha.
Through this hymn, the compassionate Lord swiftly calms the burning suffering of those caught in the desert of worldly existence.
🔥 Overall Meaning
The deepest message of Bhairava Stavah is not simply worship of a fierce form of Shiva.
It is the recognition:
Bhairava is the infinite consciousness within which the entire universe appears.
The hymn moves through a powerful spiritual progression:
Bhairava → Grace → Recognition → Fearlessness → Knowledge → Inner Bliss
The devotee begins by seeking Bhairava as a refuge, but gradually realizes that Bhairava is none other than the innermost Self.
That is why the hymn repeatedly dissolves the boundary between:
“I” and “Bhairava”
The fear of death, suffering and worldly existence loses its power when consciousness recognizes its own timeless nature.
