Trump’s Iran strategy unlikely to force Tehran to capitulate: Former US diplomat
US President Donald Trump has announced a "crushing economic operation" against Iran, warning that any country aiding Tehran will face "tremendous economic consequences." But with the military campaign having failed to achieve its stated objectives and the State Department struggling to rally allies, doubts are growing over whether economic pressure alone can force Iran to capitulate. In an interview with Al Jazeera, former senior diplomat Alan Eyre, who served on the US negotiating team for the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, said Trump's strategy is unlikely to succeed. He said the State Department is "dead in the water" and "functionally inert", making it difficult to mount an effective multilateral sanctions regime. Eyre also said Trump has transformed "America First" into "America Alone", launching the war unilaterally and now asking allies for help "a little late in the day". He said China, which buys more than 80 percent of Iranian oil exports, "doesn't respond favourably to US threats" and that threats against Beijing are "empty ones". Eyre said Iran will not capitulate under pressure, as it assumes the US is seeking to topple the Islamic Republic, and that the IRGC will not compromise "regardless of how much economic pain the US can inflict". He said it may be "too late for diplomacy" but noted Iran still sees the JCPOA as a framework.Subscribe to our channel: http://bit.ly/AJSubscribe
