Rookie Tayshaun Prince Arrives in Game 7 (ESPN Broadcast)
May 4, 2003 - The 23rd overall pick of the 2002 NBA Draft, Tayshaun Prince was planted firmly on the bench throughout the majority of his rookie season, collecting 40 DNP-CDs while averaging just 3.3 points per game.Alas, as the postseason hit, desperate times called for desperate measures. After Tracy McGrady torched the Pistons through the first three games of their first round playoff series (averaging nearly 40 points per game), head coach Rick Carlisle was desperately seeking a solution to his team's perimeter defensive woes.
Enter Tayshaun. After catching two DNPs and playing a combined 28 minutes over the first four games of the series, Prince suddenly emerged as his team's x-factor, utilizing his length to make McGrady's life more difficult while providing an unexpected scoring punch for a team often in search of a reliable third option. Prince scored 15 in a key Game 5 win (while McGrady struggled in an 8-of-20 performance), helped hold McGrady to 11-of-28 shooting in Game 6, then closed things out with a 20-point performance in Game 7, hitting 7-of-10 from the field (3-of-5 from the arc) while McGrady connected on just 7-of-24 in his season swansong.
Prince's ascent only continued in the second round against the 76ers. There, he became a clutch offensive weapon at times, emerging as his team's third leading scorer and among its most efficient. Prince's arrival and subsequent impact was so significant, in fact, that it likely played a key role in Detroit's front office decision to pass on Carmelo Anthony in that offseason's NBA Draft in favor of filling a gap in the front court with Darko Milicic.
