Catatan Administrasi Penerbangan Federal AS (FAA) mengatakan bahwa pilot adalah satu-satunya orang yang ada di dalam pesawat.
Pilot tersebut bernama William Anders (90), yang dulu pernah ikut dalam misi orbit bulan pertama.
Penjaga Pantai Pacific Northwest berupaya melakukan penyelamatan pascajatuhnya pesawat.
Namun, nyawa pilot senior tersebut tidak dapat diselamatkan.
Kematiannya membawa duka mendalam bagi Angkatan Udara Negeri Paman Sam.
Dikutip dari RT, pensiunan Mayor Jenderal Anders adalah fotografer di balik bidikan ikonik Bumi 'Earthrise' dengan latar belakang lanskap bulan.
Foto itu diambil saat menjalankan misi orbit bulan Apollo 8 AS pada tahun 1968.
Lahir pada tahun 1933 di Hong Kong, Anders dibesarkan di Sand Diego, California.
Ia belajar teknik nuklir di Institut Teknologi Angkatan Udara.
