Senegal Signs Historic Deal with Separatists | Firstpost Africa | Subscribe to Firstpost | N18GSenegal has signed a peace deal with pro-independence rebels of the Casamance region in the country’s south. The deal was signed by Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko and the leaders of the movement of democratic forces of Casamance. The agreement was signed in neighbouring Guinea-Bissau, which has mediated the peace talks. The deal ends one of Africa's longest-running conflicts in Senegal's Casamance region. The region is separated from the rest of Senegalese territory by Gambia on its northern border. The conflict here began in 1982 when the separatist movement grew out of frustrations over marginalisation and exploitation by the central government. Thousands have died, while over 60,000 have been displaced in the conflict. It has also affected Senegal's economy. Watch for more.
