External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar defended India’s longstanding ties with Russia while addressing European concerns over New Delhi’s relationship with Moscow, saying India’s foreign policy is shaped by its own history and national interests. Speaking at a discussion with European participants, Jaishankar said Russia and the Soviet Union had stood by India at critical moments and stressed that the relationship has since expanded beyond defence to include trade, investment, energy, nuclear cooperation and space.On the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Jaishankar reiterated India’s call for dialogue and diplomacy, saying New Delhi has engaged with both sides and sought to contribute to discussions on Black Sea shipping, grain and energy exports. He also warned that elevated energy prices have direct consequences for Indian households, jobs and livelihoods, arguing that uninterrupted flows of energy, trade and mobility remain crucial for India.
