Rushing Beat X - Full Game 1CC (Normal)
Rushing Beat X: Return of the Brawl Brothers is a new beat 'em up from City Connection. It's a sequel to the SNES trilogy, but people outside of Japan may not even be aware of the series. All three games were localized under different names: Rival Turf, Brawl Brothers, and The Peace Keepers. It's been over 30 years since The Peace Keepers (Rushing Beat Shura) came out, so with beat 'em ups going through a renaissance since Streets of Rage 4 dropped, this was the right time to bring the series back.Right off the bat, they obviously didn't have a high budget to work with. The graphics are low poly and low detail, but I like the way the game looks (for what it is). It's colorful, and the character models are nicely stylized, with a comic book/cel-shaded filter over them. Your special attacks have a flashy Street Fighter 6 type of effect on them, and the hits give you good feedback (the animation can be a little stiff). Of course I'd be happier if it looked better, but I'm fine with this, personally.
The combat is the highlight of this game. It's very combo centric, with juggles and cancels being essential mechanics. The cancels in particular make this feel closer to a fighting game than most other beat em ups to me, since you want to input a dash or jump directly after a move connects to cancel your recovery or continue your combo. You can hit enemies off the ground too, and follow that up with a full combo juggle. But just because you can juggle enemies doesn't mean you can do it forever, they have some limitations to prevent you from bouncing them like a basketball.
You also have a super meter that has multiple functions. You can use one of the segments of your meter to do a burst and get enemies off of you, like Guilty Gear. This is here in place of the megacrash that most other best em ups have, but it's not your only defensive mechanic. You can also counter melee hits by pressing the special attack in neutral, giving you an invincible reversal.
Once your super meter fills up, you automatically enter a heat mode. This gives some of your attacks different properties, like your throw for example will now bounce enemies off the ground, letting you follow up with a full juggle combo. Your launcher sends enemies straight up like a rocket and plants them in the ground, your ground combo sends enemies flying across the screen, etc. It can make them harder to juggle too, so you just have to experiment and figure out how to optimize your combos. This super mode also gives you access to a special attack that instantly uses up the rest of your meter. It varies by character, but Rick's rush combo is incredibly good, and works perfectly as a combo finisher.
The weapon system also works differently from most other beat em ups. There are two different types: weapons that you carry and use instantly, and weapons that get stored in your inventory. You can instantly use these at any time, even in the middle of a combo, and they can be very powerful as ways to reset your combo or do quick, highly damaging hits.
If you aren't taking advantage of all of your combat options and figuring out the best way to apply them, you're going to have a bad time. I was still learning how to optimize my damage in this run, so it's a fun system to play around with.
The healing system is also pretty unique. It's a little confusing at first, and while they explain it better in the story mode tutorials, the manual doesn't make it clear at all. But it's not hard to understand once you get it. Firstly, you'll find lots of small healing items in each stage, and they're all color coded. Each stage mainly drops one color of food items, so what you want to do is find the three different types of food, then hold on to them until you get to the shop, which appears in the middle and at the end of each stage. You can then combine all three items into one combo for a small fee, and the combo will fully heal you whenever you use it. It's not very intuitive, but it's a well designed system once you understand how it works. You can also use healing items at any time, even in the middle of being grabbed.
My main gripe with this game is that it's just too long, but you do get through it faster as you improve at the game... maybe the clear time can get down to 90 minutes?
I thought this game could be hard at first, since I didn't really understand all of its systems, so I played on Normal for my first clear. Now that I have a better idea of how it all works, the Normal 1CC isn't bad at all. I'll probably jump straight to Shura difficulty next and see how that goes.
Rushing Beat X is available now on all platforms for $19.99 with a 10% launch discount. There's also a demo available, so you can try it out first if you're on the fence. I think it's well worth the price, so check it out!
