Humanity in the midst of war - Survival and loss in Ukraine | DW Documentary

They evacuate elderly and sick people, set up medical stations and organize escape routes. New structures of protection, security and dignity are emerging in Ukraine, while war shapes everyday life.

All of Ukraine has been at war since Russia’s full-scale attack in February 2022. It is a war whose repercussions are inescapable. And it is giving rise to new structures that every country would be happier to be able to live without.
One of these is a network of carers who risk their lives to evacuate elderly and sick people from homes that they are often unable to leave on their own. For some, it’s the first journey of their lives, for others, the last.
A different team, of forensic scientists and military personnel, works to identify the remains of young soldiers. The bodies of the fallen are then transported across Ukraine to their families so that they can be buried in their hometowns. These tasks are all the more difficult, as they must be accomplished amidst the constant threat of bombs and drones.
As Russia's war of aggression rages against Ukraine, Yuri Rechinsky documents the everyday lives of those who are too weak to flee, or who care for the dead. He captures impressions of displacement, uncertainty, grief and loss, but also shows moments of solidarity, humor and resilience. "Dear Beautiful Beloved" takes a sober look at the survival strategies of people who retain their humanity in the midst of war.
