‘No accountability’ in Israel over Gaza’s destruction, says Alon Pinkas

Former Israeli ambassador and consul general in New York, Alon Pinkas, told Al Jazeera that from an Israeli perspective "there seems to be no accountability" over the destruction in Gaza, with images of the devastation rarely seen in Israel, "as if it's happening light years away". He said none of the promised ceasefire terms have materialised, including the unrestricted delivery of humanitarian aid, an Israeli withdrawal from the 65–70 percent of Gaza it controls, or Hamas disarmament. Pinkas said promises made at the Sharm El Sheikh summit, including a Board of Peace, an international stabilisation force and Gaza reconstruction, have also come to nothing because "there was never any post-war planning". He said Israel's official position is that nothing will happen until Hamas disarms, adding that "certainly it won't happen in the 42 days that we have until the election in Israel". Pinkas warned that Gaza's humanitarian situation remains dire, while international attention has shifted towards Iran and the $80bn in proposed Arab Gulf funding for reconstruction is unlikely to be available now. He said Israel "lost the moral high ground" by failing to establish field hospitals and allow more aid earlier, and warned that the consequences could increasingly be felt in the occupied West Bank, which he described as "a cauldron that is on the very precipice of exploding", citing settler violence that he attributed to "deliberate government encouragement and complicity".
