Nonostante le gravi minacce alla sua vita, è rimasta nel Paese, una scelta che ha ispirato milioni di persone», ha dichiarato Jorgen Watne Frydnes, presidente del Comitato. Dopo essere stata eletta deputata, Machado, che ha denunciato più volte le violazioni dei diritti umani e le manipolazioni elettorali in Venezuela, è stata in seguito destituita e inabilitata dalle autorità per la sua opposizione al regime. Nel 2023 ha vinto le primarie dell’opposizione in vista delle presidenziali, ma le autorità elettorali le hanno impedito la candidatura e la sfida contro Nicolas Maduro. Machado ha quindi guidato la campagna per il candidato Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia. Nel 2024 il Parlamento europeo ha assegnato a Machado e Urrutia il Premio Sakharov per la libertà di pensiero.
