While speaking to Arun Sukumar, Non-Resident Senior Fellow – Technology at ORF Middle East, United Arab Emirates, Johnstone raised concerns about weaker international norms that guide states' behaviours and a lack of stable distribution of power in the world. While referring to U.S. President Donald Trump's remarks after U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran, Johnstone said, "Leaders saying I don't need international law is worrying," claiming this kind of deals-based approach is not stable and ineffective for challenges like climate change, pandemics, and governance. However, he suggested reforms in the current global institutions and urged for a long-term rules-based approach for a stable international order that will thrive on multilateralism.
