Brasil: Bajo un sol intenso y con una temperatura de 43 °C, el Papa Juan Pablo II llegó esta mañana a Cuiabá, capital del Estado de Mato Grosso. Aquí el papá celebró una misa para 40 mil personas. El calor era tan intenso que mucha gente se sintió mal y tuvo que ser retirada del lugar. En un documento, indígenas y misionarios critican la celebración de los 500 años de una evangelización que, según dijeron, fue cómplice del exterminio de miles de pueblos y culturas indígenas. El Papa por su parte, leyó un discurso en que lamentó estas críticas y defendió el papel evangelizador de la Iglesia. Los indígenas denunciaron al Gobierno brasileño por no haber realizado la demarcación de su tierra como está previsto en la Constitución, dijeron ellos. Esta india guaraní pidió justicia por el asesinato de su padre, un líder indígena muerto pocos meses después de participar de una reunión como esta en la primera visita del Papa a Brasil.Fecha: 16/10/1991
