Why are families getting smaller, and why does motherhood feel harder to choose? In this class from Family in the Qur'an, Ustadh Asim reads Sūrat Luqmān 31:14, where Allah describes a mother carrying her child in weakness upon weakness (wahnan ʿalā wahn), and asks what that weakness looks like today: falling birth rates, the loss of the village around new mothers, and women who say they regret having children. He turns to Sayyida Maryam at the palm tree, "If only I had died before this" (Maryam 19:23), and what it means that the Qur'an records those words from the most honoured of women.
